New beginnings – for dVerse

This is for Tuesday Poetics The picturepicture is by Jinny Nieviadomy, chosen by Mish at dVersedVerse

Three eggs

We peeked in, reverent, not breathing,
Holding back fingers
Marvelling at them – so blue
They must be made of sky,
Or hold some glorious truth,
As if at any moment they could crack,
Spilling out sun and moon and stars
And time and space –
All the great mass of matter
Flowing forth, clotting and binding,
Swirling itself into great galaxies
And constellations,
Hurtling and spiraling, on and out,
Until, on some unimagined,
Distant ball of rock and water,
A woman stands, holding a child,
Joying in his sturdy strength,
Showing him three secret eggs
And whispering to him not to touch.

  1. The hidden secret of the blue eggs – yes, we cannot touch them and upset the balance of the nest. I was always taught not to touch bird eggs to just observe. This reminded me of the time some finches made a nest hidden in my flowering plant. I watched with anticipation through the spring from the first chirp to their departing flight . Truly magical

  2. Love this idea of the eggs being so blue that if they cracked they could spill out all manner of things (sun, moon, stars, time, space)—such a brilliant thought you’ve captured there!!

  3. Oh…..I LOVE the movement through this and ultimately coming to the woman holding the child, showing him the secret eggs……….and the stars and the heavens and the world shall come into his world…lovely!
