Let’s seek some comfort, you and I:
here the bright flames dance in the grate;
there the white stars are cold and high,
small thing pause at the fox’s cry,
they shiver, and they hesitate;
let’s seek some comfort, you and I.
The barn owl now swoops silent by
the lane end, and the sagging gate,
there the white stars are cold and high,
but here is wine, dark as a sigh,
and a warm place to contemplate –
let’s seek some comfort, you and I.
We are sheltered from the wild
by the walls that we create –
there the white stars are cold and high,
and the moon calls from the night sky,
and out there, adventures wait,
so let’s seek comfort, you and I,
where the white stars are cold and high.
One of the advantages of hosting for dVerse is that you know what prompt you’re doing, and have a chance to get a head start on everyone else. Here’s a villanelle for this month’s form exploration.
I like the rhythm between cold and warm, wilderness and comfort.

Beautiful, Sarah! I like the contrast between the cold and wild outside and the warm comfort inside.

I do love this, it tells a story that to me is a timeless one of seeking shelter in togetherness, it could be today or it could have been some cavemen…

I really enjoyed this. Read it three times (a lot for me, smile). The refrains (A1,A2) are fantastic. The wild world surrounding an inner comfort to be shared. The shared element was mesmerizing. Really pleasant with a touch of dark, fearful, lonely, cold but contrasted to the warm, tipsy, hugging solace of another’s love. Or at least, that is what I got.
Fun to think of a cold night, and thus cold stars — they are suns of course but really just cold light for us.
Suggestion & thoughts:
small thing –> small things
and out there, –> while out there,

A lovely villanelle, especially the ending. I can feel the warmth of wine and shelter.

I love the way you drew me into this Villanelle, Sarah, with the direct address, the small things pausing at the fox’s cry and the swooping barn owl. I love that it starts with comforting flames in the grate and ends with the moon and cold white star, and a promise of adventure!

This is beautiful. I love this form. I think it may be my favorite. I especially love this: “but here is wine, dark as a sigh, and a warm place to contemplate – let’s seek some comfort, you and I.” The mood is so inviting.
