Black Bird – rooks at sunset – quadrille for dVerse

Suddenly they rise:
we heard no signal,
but they know to go up
together, twist
and turn – a maelstrom
of black wings
and guttural croaks,
impossibly high,
for no reason
we can see,
except the delight
of flight,
and the last sight of sun.

It’s quadrille night at dVerse, De is hosting, and our word is “up”.

  1. My goodness this is absolutely fabulous in its imagery and word choices, Sarah! ❤️ I love; “a maelstrom of black wings and guttural croaks, impossibly high.” 🙂

  2. They hold a morning committee meeting in the woods near my home. After much discussion, they leave it suddenly as if receiving a clarion call. They are the most amazing birds!

  3. I enjoy watching a flock of birds rising, Sarah, and you’ve snapped it beautifully in this quadrille. I love the way they ‘twist and turn – a maelstrom of black wings and guttural croaks’ – and the rhyming phrase ‘delight of flight’.
