Blithe spirit

Sometimes I think the orchard
holds a spirit. Her bright presence
moving between the trees:
in spring, she brings the scent
of apple blossom, almost there,
and then in autumn she quickens
each fruit, makes it sweeter.
I’m fanciful. That’s my defence.

De (Whimsygizmo) is tending the bar tonight. It’s quadrille night at the dVerse poets’ pub, and we are using the word “spirit”.

  1. I saw your title and couldn’t suppress a smile, Sarah – I’m hoping to see Jennifer Saunders in Blithe Spirit at the Theatre Royal Norwich in February! Also, we have spirits in our willow and bay trees. The quince has lost its spirit this year – I hope it comes back.

  2. This is lovely–yes, there’s definitely a spirit. I like your ending, too.
    You’re title made me think of the Noel Coward play (though I couldn’t really remember what it’s about). Apparently, there’s a new movie version being made with Judi Dench and Dan Stevens.
