Sometimes I think the orchard
holds a spirit. Her bright presence
moving between the trees:
in spring, she brings the scent
of apple blossom, almost there,
and then in autumn she quickens
each fruit, makes it sweeter.
I’m fanciful. That’s my defence.
De (Whimsygizmo) is tending the bar tonight. It’s quadrille night at the dVerse poets’ pub, and we are using the word “spirit”.
Oh, I can see her! Wonderful.

And best of all… for winter we still have apple preserves

I saw your title and couldn’t suppress a smile, Sarah – I’m hoping to see Jennifer Saunders in Blithe Spirit at the Theatre Royal Norwich in February! Also, we have spirits in our willow and bay trees. The quince has lost its spirit this year – I hope it comes back.

There’s definitely a spirit over fruit producing trees and other plants, one of the most fruitful 😉 She’s a gentle spirit that loves to play among the trees.

Spirit directs the birds and insects in pollenizing the blossoms; quite the symphony.

I would welcome any spirit that offers the sweetness of that early scent, furthering it with a fall climax.

This is lovely–yes, there’s definitely a spirit. I like your ending, too.
You’re title made me think of the Noel Coward play (though I couldn’t really remember what it’s about). Apparently, there’s a new movie version being made with Judi Dench and Dan Stevens.
