Oh but her hair
smells of roses
she brings summer
into the kitchen with her
leaves a trail of sunshine
on the staircase
birdsong spills
out of the bathroom
but roses
always roses
their soft petals
their sharp thorns
Lillian is hosting at dVerse tonight. She’s inspiring us with artwork by Catrin Welz-Stein.
Ironically enough, the sharp thorns are what makes them addictive haha 🙂

Love this…..the essence of her is definitely the roses. But her sweetness, her nature, comes out also in the trail of sunshine and the birdsong. Beautifully captures this piece of artwork!

Oh the sharp thorns… almost feel like it’s partly her tongue spilling the words like glass on the floor.

You capture the essence of the portrait so well here, Sarah! ❤️ I love; “leaves a trail of sunshine
on the staircase/birdsong spills out of the bathroom.” 😀

This was my favorite stanza:
“she brings summer
into the kitchen with her…”
It says so much and it’s very visceral. You describe the captivating beauty and romance very well from the portrait. Beautiful and stunning work, yet again. I am stunned.

Your first two lines make me want me to put my nose in her hair and breathe in roses!

‘Every rose bears a thorn’ – I like how you included that idea at the end after filling the house with sunshine and birdsong.

Your poem is delicate and fragrant, Sarah, and I love how it spills into every room! But oh, those thorns, is there no escaping them?

But who is she? I imagine her as an irritating adolescent who squats the bathroom and throws shampoo bottles at the door when someone else wants to use it.

The way her presence fills every room in the house and the intertwined roses gives way to thorns. That unexpectedly sharp ending is priceless 🙂
