Advent

I just feel that we should be planting something,
pressing our fingers deep into the dark earth.
What, though? I can’t think of it –
I just feel that we should be planting something –
hopes – dreams – fairy lights?
I don’t know. Memories of sunshine?
I just feel that we should be planting something,
pressing our fingers deep into the dark earth.

I’m planning to spend December playing with triolets. This is for earthweal – a triolet of hoping and waiting.

  1. A great crop of truth, decency and humanity – its in short supply! Love this poem, captures my restless need to make something good happen in spite of it all

  2. A true Advent meditation, sifting through the remains of the year to ask what is or should have been there all along. Absence and presence are in that thought, which I count as a silver bell – B

  3. That’s a great idea, playing with triolets, Sarah! I might write a few myself. I always like the idea of planting, and hopes, dreams, fairy lights, memories of sunshine sound good to me. I love this poem!

  4. I love this. . I woke up with the same feeling and went to the garden centre this morning. It’s turning towards summere here so I bought bright marigolds for their cheerfulness, petunias for a window box and tomato seedlings because they smell like summer to me.
