Apple

I’ve peeled so many apples now
my hands know the firm roundness of them,
the movement of the blade around them —
a sharp satellite, trailing yellow juice.

I cut from stem to calyx, downwards:
the knife runs cleanly through.
There is a wholesomeness to apples:
the white flesh crisp, fine-grained,
the sweet, sharp scent. The skin.

I’m echoing older, defter hands –
All Hallows spiral; petals sliced
from fine white apple-flesh,
fanned out and sugared,
blanketed in dough or pastry,
motherhood enfleshed, enmeshed;
the shimmering crescents splayed
beside a piece of cheese. I know
you cut along those lines
of longitude, stem down to calyx,

but sometimes, secretly, the witch in me
slices across the apple’s midriff,
just to view the secret star
all apples hold inside them.

Just to remind myself it’s there.

A fruity little number for Kim at dVerse

  1. This is absolutely gorgeous! I especially love this part; “I’m echoing older, defter hands –All Hallows spiral; petals sliced from fine white apple-flesh, fanned out and sugared, blanketed in dough or pastry.” Your poem adds to the appeal and reminds us why they are so special! 💝💝

  2. Apples and stars, a common theme it seems! I loved reading this, the style reminds me a tad of Plath. Very beautifully and hauntingly penned, it’s so immersing.

  3. I love the different ways to cut them, with each perspective unique. The last one is a powerful mystical image – the secret star inside the apples.

  4. A deliciously fruity little number, Sarah! Mothers do peel a lot of apples over the years(‘enfleshed, enmeshed’) and I love the details: the ‘firm roundness’, the ‘sharp satellite, trailing yellow juice’, the ‘secret star’ and the All Hallows spiral – does anyone still bob for apples? You and I have so much in common – most of my lunches consist of crackers, cheese and an apple!

  5. I loved the whole detailed description and could feel the wholesomeness you described! I especially loved: but sometimes, secretly, the witch in me / slices across the apple’s midriff / just to view the secret star / all apples hold inside them / Just to remind myself it’s there. Agreed! ❤

  6. Wonderful poem. I occasionally slice an apple the wrong way to see the star too. I showed my kids the star only very recently – I had assumed they must know about it, that I must have showed them years ago, but either I hadn’t or they’d forgotten. 🙂

  7. Deft and delicious, saving the best for the very last. Your recent harrows have sharpened your voice. May not be much of a trade-off but it really shows.
